Ballistic Challenge

This week, the children picked a ball skill goal they would like to practise towards. This is part of the PSG's Ballistic Ball Challenge. We absolutely loved being outside practising with a ball.

Speaking of practising, have you seen Paige and her hula hoop... what a hula hoop star!

Finding and using information

The class have chosen four gold mining questions to study:

1. Where did the gold miners come from?
2. Where did the gold miners find gold in New Zealand during the 1800s?
3. Why was the gold mining rush called a, 'Boom and a bust?'
4. What did the gold miners look like?

Each child has been focusing on one question. We have found information in the libraries and are now using information.

We all found a little bit of information through words and pictures. The atlases and globe in class were very helpful in answering questions 1 and 2. For question 4, there were loads of photos and drawings of gold miners to show us how the gold miners looked.

We love our topic of gold mining!! Click on the pictures to make them bigger.

Wow! Read the part that starts, "The population..." This shows us how many people rushed to Central Otago during the gold rush. This helps answer question 3.
Wow! Read the part that starts, "Many new arrivals..." This helps answer question 1.

Here is a picture of Gabriel Read. Tell your family who he was.
At the end of the gold rush, he ended up poor...
Can you guess why?

News

Poppy and Edward brought in their New Lynn library certificates to show the class. They said that it was easy and fun to go and ask for one at the library. Well done!

Edward showed us photos of where his great grandfather and great uncle went to school in Thames.... a mining school! Wow, Edward has gold mining in the blood!

The 'th' sound

We are doing a big focus on essential list words. Your very own list is coming home this week for you to practise in a quiet spot at home. Practise five list words per week. You will still be receiving your phonics words. This week we are studying the 'th' sound in spelling. Take a look at this excellent video kids! Click here.

In spelling, we will be studying digraphs for the rest of the term. Have a sing along to this poetry video of digraphs.

Well done Room 24 for having fun, being great sports... and doing VERY well at cross country. The children ran fast and paced themselves along the track (twice around the school).

New Lynn Library Trip

We had an absolutely fantastic time at the New Lynn Library finding books on gold mining. The children were very excited to find books with detailed illustrations and photos of Central Otago gold mining.
