Jack's great great grandfather

Jack brought in a photo of his great great grandfather from World War 1. It was very special to get to see a piece of Jack's history. And....we couldn't believe how much Jack looks like his great great granddad!

Ribbons please

Room 24 are performing a dance with Room 19 at the end of the term.  We will be performing our dance to a version of the beautiful song, True Colours.

Our learning goal is to show movement and dance pathways that represent the lyrics of the song. We would like to show some of this through ribbons. If you have any ribbons or wide material that we can cut up to make ribbons, it would be most appreciated.
Thank you for any contribution to the ribbon fund.

No swimming this week or next week

For this week and next week, there will be no swimming for Room 24.

Ara Pakeke children are doing a special swimming course called Skills for Life Swimming. This course takes up all the swimming slots of Week 8 and 9. It is an intensive swimming course that will be available to Room 24 children when they become Year 3s.

Swimming for Room 24 will resume in Week 10 (31 March - 4 April).

The Waka Walk

I joined the Waka Walk on Sunday morning with Mrs Makani, Tia Makani and Mrs Bland. It was the start of the Eco West Festival. We absolutely loved this event. On the walk, we learnt about the history of New Lynn and Green Bay... and picked up rubbish on the way. At the end of the walk there was a band, healthy food and a canoe to marvel at - it was made out of coke bottles and had just returned from a 100km voyage down the Whanganui River to raise awareness of single use plastic bottles.

A robotics visit on Green Day

On Friday it was Green Day where we got to celebrate St Patrick's Day in our finest and whackiest green clothes. While we ate our lunch, we were visited by Jackson from the senior school. He showed us what he had been making on the Robotics programme. He made a robot and programmed it to turn 90 degrees every time it bumped into something - no remote control needed.

There will be opportunities for children at Arahoe in their later years to go on the fantastic Robotics programme. Click here to learn more about Robotics.

A week that was

Thank you parents for helping your children write about their names, ancestry and culture - so fascinating to read and share with the class! If you have not written on Padlet yet, you can always email me and I'll put it on for you - due Friday.

Here are some photos taken over the week:
Off to the Library
Drinking milk - thanks Fonterra and farmer shareholders.
The senior children helped us learn how to reduce and recycle the milk cartons. It was tricky folding the cartons - we got to write our name on the board if we folded the carton correctly. The cartons will be sent to Vietnam where they will be made into roof tiles. It was lovely to drink something so cold for morning tea. We are very grateful to Fonterra for offering to provide Arahoe with milk every day.
Kareena's Birthday
Kareena turned 6 today and was a gracious host to everyone. She reminded the children to say thank you at the beginning and she was very attentive in asking each child if they enjoyed their cake. Ka pai, Kareena! Thank you for your party and beautiful manners.

Super singers and more beach photos

Wow, look who got top marks for singing today from Mrs Sadgrove. Well done Tarapatiki and Levi!!
Here are three more photos from the beach trip that were sent to me today by Mrs Makani. The marvelous memories continue... This week, we are writing about our beach trip and will use our beach photos as reminders of all the things we could describe.

Eco West Festival

The Eco West Festival kicks off this weekend. There are many fantastic events for you and your family. The Eco West Festival fits in well to Arahoe's "Green" learning theme this year.

You're welcome to join me, Kirsten Bland, Tania Makani and other teachers from Arahoe on the Waka Walk this Sunday 16 March. We will retrace steps Maori took to take their waka (canoe) from the Waitemata to the Manukau - a walk manageable for Year 2s (a few lollies on the way will help). It starts at Olympic Park at 9:00am.

Please find more information on Eco West under, "Newletters." There are so many good events - take your pick!

Winners

Here are the winners of the Year 2 sandcastle competition. They are from a variety of Year 2 classes and worked together spontaneously to create a system of castles, moats, roads and tunnels - all interconnected. Great community work children! Well done to all the sand castle competition entries - all to a very high standard.
The Parents vs Kids tug-of-war was a grueling battle but the overall winners were undoubtedly the children, pulling the parents right back into kids' territory. Ka pai tamariki!

Keeping Ourselves Safe (KOS)

Arahoe School children are about to start learning about Keeping Ourselves Safe (KOS).

This will be taught through the teachers and through Constable Carl, our local police officer. It is a positive personal safety (child protection) programme that aims to provide children and young people with the skills to cope with situations that might involve abuse. It will help them keep themselves safe in their interactions with other people.

KOS was developed in response to an increased awareness and concern among teachers and police of the need to protect young people from abuse. Please click on this link to find out more about the programme, Keeping Ourselves Safe.

Birthday Girl

It was Persia's birthday on Friday. She showed us how to be a kind and polite host of a party. You are a star, Persia! We loved your party.

Room 24 Unique Profiles

Room 24 is learning to show how we are special and unique. Our next step is to do some e-learning by writing about ourselves on Padlet. Padlet is a simple Google tool where you can post things easily.

Please help your child click on Padlet below and help them fill in information about their name, ancestry and their culture. I have written a little bit about me to start… but you can't read about it until you have the password!

Only Room 24 parents and children will be able to see and write on our Padlet site. This week, I will send home the password and details on how to use Padlet. Please log on and help your child complete their profile by next week, Friday 14 March.

Thank you
